This looks like what I am looking for. Could you send me the web part code? I copied the code from above, but I think I am missing something. Do you have step-by-step procedures?

Thanks

Sheila,

I hope this helps – if not please reply & I will try again.

The is all being done outside of Vision but on their database & displayed on our intranet which is also separate from the Vision web interface. At the conference the ability to display any web page in the workspace on Visio was shown via some simple menu edits. We are just now starting to use that option to integrate some of these outside presentations.

You can add viewing restrictions in Sharepoint using the Business Data Catalog and SP lists (I am pretty new to SP so I would have to look at that further). In short I am creating a view and limiting access to that view via a SQL Login – all on the database directly.

The SQL View post was in response to a question a gentleman from Texas raised at the conference about connecting MS Access to the Vision Database. First if you can avoid hooking up MS Access please do so. But the concerns are that to give them access to something like the EM table was too revealing so to pair it down to just what you want to reveal you can create a SQL view. This view lets you pick the fields and creates a table on the fly for you to allow access to. You need to create SQL login using SQL authentication (there are other options but this is the easiest) .

I found an error the grant should be Grant Select (not execute) on the view. I have since corrected the post.

Let me know if you are trying to use MS Access because there are some options and gotchas .

The view can restrict what records you see too but my example does not do that. If interested you can for example pass in the Employee ID to a Stored Procedure and strict something like following:

Create Procedure SupervisorView
As
(
                @Supervisor   nvarchar(50)
)
as
Select * from FilteredEmployeeView Where Supervisor = @Supervisor

That way you get control over fields and records too.

I'm not the most technically knowledgeable person, so this is probably a clueless question, but is this a restriction that is set up from within Vision? Does the user who is viewing the employee info do so from Vision or via another interface like SharePoint? And are the restrictions for the records the person can see or for specific information within the record, such as the pay?

And thanks so much for doing this blog! I was at the conference session your company put on last week and am impressed with what you've done.
